From the top of the rock pile

[That's not a cross in the foreground — it's a pole with a sign for 'Crawford Path'. To the right is the main building where the tourists go and weather instruments.]

Here's the news from Mount Washington.

'Yesterday broke a daily high record of 55 degrees set in 1979 by reaching 57 degrees! Already today the summit has tied the daily record for today which is 53 degrees, also set back in 1979. The thought of snow has been nothing but a dream. The summit staff can only hope that cold air will stay in place for the season. For now it appears that the only place to lay some ski tracks in October is in the Rocky Mountains.'

Two years ago there was tons of snow up there. Not today.

More locally, it has been raining and blowing. The big maple tree outside the study window has lost all its leaves; it had a quarter of them left yesterday when I was raking.
