What a difference an election can make

For the first time, I suspect, the government of El Salvador has recognised the murdered Jesuits and their companions because the government no longer is ARENA (the one that was in place at the time of the massacre and largely attributed to their origin) but the FMLN.

The government recognises posthumously the massacred Jesuits. The President of the Republic, Mauricio Funes, gave to the families of the six Jesuits assassinated by the army, in November 1989, the National Order José Matías Delgado in the rank of the High Cross, Gold Plaque, the highest recognition that the government can award. In the photo, receiving the recognition from the hands of President Funes is the president Jesuit Jon Sobrino. Watching is the Rector of UCA, priest José María Tojeira. This is good news.

Joel and I helped Salvadorean refugees in California during this awful time. I am grateful that this recognition has finally happened.
