Will there be same-sex marriage on a federal level in my lifetime (now that I am easily more than halfway through it)? I doubt it.
Witness the latest nominee to the Supreme Court, Elena Kagan, who says quite bluntly that “there is no federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage.”
For this reason, à quoi bon state level marriage if it is not recognised across the country? So one can live in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa and New Hampshire in same-sex marriage and that is it.
For the time being, however, same-sex couples still have to file single tax returns on the federal level, go through immigration and customs as though they have no family member travelling with them and countless other indignities.
Like a broken record, all I can ask is, 'Of what are people so afraid? If opposite-sex marriage is so fragile that it needs to be protected from the gays, then there is something wrong here.' Until we do our homework on what marriage is and is not, we are not going to advance in this stalemate.

It is almost impossible to argue with a person who is bitterly opposed to same sex marriage. Asked how my marriage might affect theirs (straight or ss), they walk away. When religion is brought up and marriage involving atheists is mentioned, they walk away. When asked if marriages done outside a church are valid, they walk away. I'm convinced that the first thought that occurs to others is about anal sex which they believe is horrible, sinful, scary resulting in automatic brain shutdown. I'm afraid all the logic or appeal to decency or justice will never work with many. They just have to die off. Or many more have to leave the closet now forcing the issue.
I think the possibilities of fear and loathing lifting are real...afterall, it´s hard to keep thinking people of different colors are ¨different¨ if you know, and sometimes even love, a person of a different color/culture...the very ¨loathing¨ of whole groups of humanity (from either side) is a example of lack of communication, integration and acceptance equals humility...saying NO to injustice, abuse, exploitation, persecution and blind fear and hate must happen in order to stop the madness (and it is madness)...the secret lies in the ¨knowing¨ and not it the ¨not knowing¨...vertical (mostly) and inclusive (mostly) interaction is something that LGBT know best...LGBT Christians/others are way ahead of the rest of humanity on the getting-to-know-and-love oneanother REAL LIFE EXPERIENCED curve. LGBT bring a whole new (mostly) point of view on the subject of growing away from the ugliness of fear=segregation=difference=outcasting and the ever popular human emotional hideout of playing pretend. REALITY just takes some getting used to and then the fear WILL/DOES fall away.
Feh.
Is she the best we can do? It seems Obama's middle of the road is far too conservative for me.
