Oxymoron

With all the news this week about the House of Bishops deposing Robert Duncan of Pittsburgh, now being called a martyr by the Archbishop of the Middle East, my antennae were on high alert to the words, 'traditional' and 'orthodox.'

Much was my surprise, then, this morning when I got a mailing from an 'Orthodox Presbyterian' church in the next city over. I didn't know such a thing existed and thought it was some recent manifestation of the current unpleasantness, funded heavily by the IRD. But, no, this is a breakoff from the Presbyterian Church USA since 1936 because its members felt the Presbyterian Church wasn't holding strictly enough to Calvinist teachings.

Still, when I hear the word, 'Orthodox,' I tend more to think of that church's glorious liturgy, incense, vestments, candles and votives and lots of them (and, sigh, lack of women priests and comments about TEC's being out of communion with them), rather than those who espouse a narrow (sorry) theological interpretation and, therefore, had quite a funny mental picture.

Ah the noble words by the truly befuddled leader of the Middle East...it's hard to imagine that Bob of Pittsburgh is anything other than another flawed person who has attempted to destroy the Church to whom/with whom he made his sacred vows...around here that would be a traitor not a martyr...but whatever, vaya con Dios as Duncan finally found his "place to stand" at the Province of Southern Conealone.
