The wild card

One thing I have learned well over my years in parish ministry is that whenever I am trying to leave for any extended period of time, whether vacation, continuing ed or church business, God laughs at my plans and throws in a joker card... without fail.

And so it is this time... our dear saint in the hospital (on top of the ridge that forms the eastern side of this valley) and the weather today. Last year we got 28 inches of snow on Valentine's Day; this year we have gotten about seven inches of wet stuff and it is still coming down, an anticipated 4-7 inches overnight.

So here's what it looked like at 7.45 this morning:

While heavy, the snow really is quite pretty the way it forms a negative image to the tree branches on which it rests.

My life is spent shovelling the ramps. It was hard getting to my office because of the bent-over trees (which the chickadees were loving).

Orange Guy watches me go in and out of my office (that is how close the rectory is to the office door). If you look closely, you can see the falling snow.

Despite the weather, 11 brave souls showed up this evening for the Ash Wednesday liturgy. (Compa went to her church and only she and the priest were there so they didn't have the service.) Add that onto the 11 who came to the afternoon at the nursing home, the 3 of us at a home communion, and we did up Ash Wednesday well for these parts of the world... add in visit to said saint in hospital, coming home to see that the shed roof had massively dumped in the driveway and shovelling it out, and I am done up for the day.
