So the National Weather Service in Burlington has issued the following advisory to go into effect from 7.00 tonight to 4.00 tomorrow afternoon. I am driving down to Marblehead MA tomorrow to do a presentation on El Salvador and the MDGs so will have to deal with fun.
SNOW AND SLEET IS EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO CENTRAL VERMONT BY EVENING AND REACH THE CANADIAN BORDER BY 10 PM. SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATION OF 1 TO 2 INCHES POSSIBLE THROUGH MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. THEN A TRANSITION TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED AS SIGNIFICANT WARM AIR MOVES OVER THE REGION ALOFT. THE SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. ON WEDNESDAY...FREEZING RAIN WILL LIKELY CHANGE TO RAIN AT TIMES IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF CENTRAL VERMONT...BUT REMAIN FREEZING RAIN IN THE DEEPER VALLEYS OF NORTHEAST VERMONT BEFORE A GRADUAL CHANGEOVER TO SNOW SHOWERS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR SOME DAMAGE TO TREES AND POWER LINES ACROSS NORTHERN VERMONT WITH THIS SYSTEM., LEADING TO THE PROSPECT OF SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES DURING WEDNESDAY MORNING.
And they're saying we may get half an inch of ice. Oh joy.
The shed roof dumped so I need to go out and clear the driveway. Then off to vote.
[photo: of my town circa 1880. The church in the lower left corner with the '†' is mine. It no longer has a steeple; that blew down twice and the congregation decided not to rebuild it.]

Prayers going for safe travel. Driving is no problem here but walking is another situation. Ugh.
I say build a retractable steeple. You know, it could be raised for good weather, and during bad weather it can sink down through a hatch and have a door slide into place and cover up the opening. Sort of like those podiums or set pieces that rise from nowhere on some of the more sophisticated stages. The technical effect would be grand. And hey, you could even decorate it for Christmas to satisfy those who may have been unsure as to whether the whole idea was simply in bad taste versus horrifyingly tacky. :)
Come to think of it, though, I'll bet one exists somewhere. The Southern States would be a good bet -- I'll have to Google it.
