Loon Protection

The sign that greets boaters at the sign-in for Green River Reserve makes it clear that the state is serious about protecting loons. The map shows a huge area that is off-limits during loon nesting season.

A couple years ago on Lake Umbagog in NH/ME, I got to see two parent loons teaching their little one how to fish and dive. And the little loon really did ride around on its parent's back.

It's hard to remember the loon's haunting call when back here I hear the Vermonter train whistle echo through the valley but I know that they are out there tonight calling to one another.
