Serious question

No snarks here (this is not the Mad One's place). I really want to know: Why does the pope wear red shoes?

According to NPR, ATC tonight, it's because it is a reminder of his being a cardinal. His shoes cost 400 Euros, about $680 in this day and age. Pope John Paul II wore brown shoes.

Pope Benedict XVI's ruby red shoes are drawing plenty of attention as he visits Washington, D.C. The handmade loafers, crafted for Benedict by an Italian shoemaker, are seen as a statement of his desire to demonstrate continuity with the symbols and history of the church. Although Pope John Paul II often wore brown shoes, other pontiffs have also worn red shoes. Benedict's shoes also serve as a reminder of the many years he wore the red cloth of a cardinal.

Oh hogwash. It's nothing to do with his having been a cardinal. It's the one flashy fashion statement he gets to make and I have some thoughts about that which are unpublishable. (They are, however, based in reality.)

I will say this: it's distracting, and he is going to be remembered for the Red Prada shoes. ($600-plus?!)

I know, a pope's gotta have fun, but there are other ways. J2P2 went skiing. (Never thought we'd miss JP2, did we?!)

Okay, I am cranky, I just got out of class and I need to go home to my cat and some food with protein in it.

Never thought we'd miss JP2!! Oh Jane, how I love Jane!

(Although whenever I become misty eyed over JP2 and it does happen at moments like these, I simply say out loud - God preserve the memory of and the legacy of Oscar Romero and then I no longer feel misty.)

The red shoes are complete bulls**t. This guy is so out of touch with what it means to be the vicar of Christ in the contemporary world.

I am reasonably sure that the Holy Spirit was up to something three years ago, when he was elected.

I just can't imagine what... Or maybe I can.

I wasn't going to comment because, you know, serious and everything. But, I have wondered what would happen if he clicked his heels together.

Too bad he doesn't wear sandals to remind him of Jesus. Or, better, no shoes at all to remind him of those who have no shoes.

I feel sorry for Benny. We are all mainly products of our experiences and environment. He can't help being totally clueless any more than I can help being a flaming liberal.

Now, do you really think I could keep the snarks away (including myself) and be serious about this for too long?
