The Rev. Elyn MacInnis, an Episcopal mission volunteer in China, has started an online journal to report on the effects of recent earthquakes on the people and congregations of the country. "Elyn's Journal" documents the results of the devastating earthquakes, how local people are coping with the destruction, and what Christians in the region are doing to help.
"The loss of life is dreadful, and the numbers of people without houses is staggering," Elyn reports. "The quake reminds me a little of 9-11, or when the Challenger exploded on the way to space. It is a time when everyone is almost completely focused on what happened. Many, many people are rising to the occasion and trying to help in whatever way they can."
In addition to documenting the day-to-day aftermath, "Elyn's Journal" includes prayer requests, needs, and photos.
MacInnis, her husband, Peter, and two daughters, Mika and Charlotte, have lived in China for more than 20 years during its explosive period of modernization and economic growth. She has served two international congregations, at St. Paul's Church in Nanjing, and later at the Congregation of the Good Shepherd in Beijing. Her work with service projects supported by her congregations has taken her throughout the country and given her a rich understanding of China and the Eastern way of thinking.

Elyn is the coolest missionary in TEC. You should see the film about her in the Windows on Mission dvd. I can't believe I was included in the same dvd with her.
Oh my, I went to divinity school with Elyn and Peter! I was at their wedding! (In the EDS chapel, with a bagpiper and Peter and attendants in kilts.) She got our HDS alumni/ae award a few years ago and that's the first I'd heard of her in years because we had lost touch. I must write her. And must read your link first. (Still staggering under huge project I can only leave for a few mn at a time -- should be done in a week or two.) Padre Mickey, I think you two are way up there in the coolness quotient.
As I recall either she or Peter grew up in China or had some kind of pre-existing China background.

Jane, I believe it was Peter who was a missionary kid in China (like my mom!).
Their daughters are amazing. They were stars on a pop show in China!
